About Me

My photo
We were married in September 2005. We're best friends, and we love traveling and exploring new places. We like sci-fi movies and watching the history channel. Our little boy was born February 1, 2010. He is named Jeff Jr. or JJ. Our daughter Moira was born July 28, 2011. We have a cat named Munchkin. Jeff is a career military officer, and Karen works for a family services program for the Army. We live in Monterey, California. We are making this blog for our family and friends who we miss and want to share our life with.

Our birthday boy!

He's almost 2!

Tomorrow my mini Jeff will be 2 years old! What an amazing, incredible, wonderful two years it has been. Words cannot describe what Jeff and I thought would happen when we found out I was pregnant with this amazing little boy. He has changed our world!

We love you JJ!

Sitting up and big boy chairs

Moira has now begun to sit up for short periods of time! She is all over exploring her world. Our house is pretty well baby proof in the living room, JJ's room and our room. She is almost able to push herself up into a sitting position. She is a very happy baby girl. She loves to laugh and giggle and make funny little noises. She loves playing with crinkly toys and even her diaper wipe package is fun. She seems to be getting bigger by the day!

JJ has started sitting on a stool to eat lunch at our kitchen island and sitting on a dining room chair to eat dinner. We went to a our favorite Thai restaurant tonight and he wanted a regular chair to sit in. He pulled it over so he could sit next to Daddy and lined his cars up around his plate because they were hungry. He did pretty good behavior-wise in the restaurant sitting in the chair. We were a little afraid he'd want to get up and walk around. He ate his chow mien noodles and had a few sips of my Thai tea.

"JJ's turn"

In JJ's world, he is the owner of all the cars at home, at daycare, in stores and anywhere he sees a car. They can be cars we drive in, pictures, on TV or toys... they are all "JJ's vroom vroom." He has just started to say "car." I think it has to be frustrating to not be able to say the name of the thing you love the most in the world.

JJ's arch-nemesis at daycare is Colin. Colin is a nice little boy who happens to like cars. Colin playing with cars is not part of JJ’s plan. Two year olds are not very good at sharing. If you ask JJ about Colin, he will say, “JJ’s vroom vroom,” and will start muttering about books and cars and everything else that is JJ’s. We have been working on sharing, and this week JJ finally understands.

He now understands that when it is someone’s turn, he cannot reach and take the thing the other person is playing with. This does not mean he politely walks away and waits his turn. He will stand next to the person and say “JJ’s turn” until it is JJ’s turn. I guess it’s an improvement, right?

Moira is fully crawling now. What started out last week as uncoordinated movement is now up on all fours crawling! She is exploring her world. She is so cute. She even likes JJ’s cars J He is learning to bring her a toy to trade for the cars she is taking. He will tell her “JJ’s toy” when he takes the toy. She can sit by herself for about 5 minutes or more. She loves to babble and giggle.

They are wonderful precious children. We could not have asked for anyone better or different!

I’m getting closer to finishing my master’s degree. I’m five weeks away from giving my capstone presentation. A thesis is typically a scientific study. A capstone is like a thesis, but includes policy recommendations so the name is different. I didn’t know this before I got involved in this program. My hypothesis that Army Community Service at the Presidio of Monterey will experience an increase in customer contact among first-term Service Members and their Families with the active use of the Army Family Team Building (AFTB) Facebook page. I am having a lot of fun using Facebook to interact with Military Families.

I’m happy to be finishing my program. This final class is actually helping me get through Jeff’s upcoming trip. Honestly, I’m heartbroken, so these last few weeks of staying focused on the capstone and studies is helping me.

No more definite news on Jeff. He is still going for training at the end of this month and then off to lands far away shortly after the training is complete.

We are enjoying our time together as a family. Much love to everyone!

Sentences and teeth, oh my!

JJ has been communicating with sign language and spoken words for about a year now, but he started speaking in 3-4 words sentences this past week. Our usual bedtime routine is to give the kids a bath, read a book or two in our bed, and then JJ goes into his bed where we read another book. I finishing up cleaning up the bathroom after JJ's bath. JJ got into our bed with Jeff and Moira and called out to me, "Sit down mama" and pointed at my side of the bed.

Of course his favorite words are mine and no :)

Since that night, he has been asking us to walk, to eat, for a bath, to wash his hands and to use the bathroom. Amazing! He has been telling us his cars are hungry and tired. He is telling us Moira is hungry, wants toys and is tired. He is learning his colors and can say the alphabet with help. He can also count to 6 with help. He knows quite a few words in Spanish, but only speaks Spanish if we speak to him in Spanish.

Moira started to crawl this week! She has been rolling over for a while, and has been rolling around to move. She is just starting out with crawling and doing a great job. She is reaching for toys. She likes JJ's old favorite monkey rattle.

Moira got her first 2 teeth on January 2nd. She has one top and one bottom tooth.

2 years old already?

I just looked over at Jeff and asked him if this could be true. The two years have gone by faster than we could have ever imagined!

I remember going into labor, having the C-section, finding out about his spina bifida and the surgeries... and tonight we have a little boy who tells me "sit mama, book" before he goes bed. WOW! He is a true miracle. We couldn't have planned for a better child. We have learned more from him than he will ever be able to learn from us.

He is running and just learned to jump. He goes up and down stairs. We still help him down stair because we are afraid of him falling. He is learning his colors and numbers. He knows his body parts. He even knows a few words in Spanish.

Moira is growing by the day. Her eyes are still blue and her hair has a pretty reddish tint to it. She is 26.5" and 16 pounds. She is laughing and cooing and learning to crawl.

I'm almost done with my Master's degree in Public Administration. I have a 3.8 GPA and am getting ready to graduate with honors.
